How did Michael’s music influence your work for him, if at all?
Nate Giorgio: It was just an awesome experience to hear his music and the quality behind it all. That was plenty to influence me and my art. MJ’s music put so many visuals into my brain whenever I heard it… you can see how I could place him in the heavens, or his eyes in a powerful burst of light, even a soft straight forward portrait meant something. I would tell him “I could put you in any situation MJ,” he had that quality. He’s really one of the few entertainers that have an ethereal soul.

Michael Jackson -Tribute. 2009 by Stephen B Whatley. Via the artist’s flickr.
A new portrait-tribute to the late Michael Jackson (1958-2009), that Expressionist artist Stephen B Whatley felt moved to paint, on the day of the legendary singer’s funeral at Forest Lawn Cemetry in California; on September 3, 2009. Many people - including other showbusiness stars - have sat for a Whatley portrait and found that the artist uncovers a heartfelt essence as he paints from life. So too, when working from photographs, Stephen B Whatley, reaches deep; and in his Michael Jackson tribute studied a montage of 16 photographs of the star as he felt his way around the canvas. The artist says “I paint from my heart and soul with many prayers..” “… and what I realised as I painted whilst studying photographs from the early 1980s to present day was that despite the physical changes to his face, Michael remained beautiful - I felt the beauty and kindness of his soul coming through - and felt tearfully overwhelmed and as ever emotionally spent at the completion of creating..” ~ Stephen B Whatley. The work of Stephen B Whatley is in private collections worldwide and in public collections including BBC Heritage and the Royal Collection of Queen Elizabeth II; and this original iconic portrait of Michael Jackson will soon be available to collectors.
